Fitting your sliding wardrobe doors: step-by-step
Prepare the space
Before you begin fitting your new sliding wardrobes, you have to prepare your chosen space to ensure the build process goes smoothly.
1. Build your interiors first
Whatever you intend to use your wardrobe space for, be sure to build interiors before installing your sliding wardrobe doors, or at the least, ensure you have prepared enough space to accommodate.
This will allow you to install the shelves, racks, or cupboards, saving unnecessary wear or potential damage to your wardrobe doors.
2. Clear any water pipes and electrical cables
Doing this will keep you safe and will also ensure that these pipes and cables are left undamaged, along with the contents of the space itself.
3. Remove coving and any other obstructions
Removing coving is important if it is likely to be an obstruction, as this will allow you to fit the top track correctly.
Get your measurements
To ensure you are fully prepared to fit your sliding wardrobe doors, ensure you have all the measurements required:
- Starting with the width will allow you to make any necessary door measurements. Door adjustments can accommodate a variance of 20mm in width.
- Moving onto the height, take three measurements at both sides and the centre. Keep in mind, that if the opening isn’t square, the top track can accommodate a variance of 12mm in height.
Fitting the track
- If you purchase your sliding wardrobe doors from Forsyth, the top track will normally come pre-drilled, so only the bottom track will need attention in this way. Using your measurements, cut your tracks to size.
- When fixing the bottom track, ensure that it’s set back 25mm from the face of the top track. You may need to cut a section from the skirting board to accommodate the bottom track, although if you wish to maintain the skirting, this can also be an option (discussed in more detail later).
- It’s worth noting sliding doors may snag on the carpets and rugs, so be sure to fit floor liners if you have carpets or intend to accommodate them. An 18mm floor liner will set carpets back and prevent snagging but remember to deduct 18mm from your height measurements.
- Once both tracks are fitted, installing the doors is easy! Simply lift the door onto the top track and drop into the bottom. To lock the doors into the bottom track, engage the blue locking mechanisms.
